When you think of ‘brand’, it may be natural to imagine a logo or a brochure, and “stuff” with your name on it.
But your brand and your position in the market starts much closer to home, before you launch or create anything with a logo on it. It’s your purpose, vision, and values; and specifically, how those things are communicated to your people that massively influences your effectiveness over time.
In the industry, you’ll hear “Employee Experience” as the catch-all for the part of brand that is central to your internal communication and people development.
As a creative brand agency, we’ve seen the landscape change over the years, and Employee Experience is now a board level challenge; something that organisations need to prioritise to effectively recruit, retain and empower their teams.
It is also now a cross-departmental challenge, and ‘Brand Communications’ is as much on the list of HR, People and Operations leaders, as it is Marketing, where disparate teams are working in new ways post-Covid, and organisations are dealing with rapid changes in the labour market.
The purpose and vision of an organisation unites people and gives them a common direction of travel, and a way to measure progress.
Values bring about consistency around expected behaviours to help the organisation and its people reach their potential together as one team. They directly inform the culture and experience you want to achieve.
Communicating the purpose, vision and values helps to start a conversation with potential employees who are increasingly interested in what you stand for.
Typically, we see organisations look at their internal communications or employee experience when undertaking a large project or a plan of change in the business, and there is a realisation that there may be a lack of a shared purpose, vision or values to help with change communications.
It can also be triggered by a need to retain and attract new people, sometimes to support ambitious growth plans, or in response to a change in your own strategy.
We also frequently work with clients who begin a brand project to develop a new visual identify, and by working backwards the challenge begins with really needing to understand and clearly define who you are, before we can effectively communicate visually.
Whatever the driver or the reason for change, our focus is always on your world, not ours; on getting under the skin of the challenge and working with the senior team in your organisation to connect your people to your purpose.
You can find out more about our approach to Employee Experience on our website – we’ve called it Connect because that’s exactly what we want to help you to do!
